White Lentil and Mince Curry

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu!



This recipe is for White Lentil and Mince Curry. It is my grandmothers' recipe which has been passed down to my mother. I was a bit sceptical when she first told me about it, but it was delicious.

A Simple List of Ingredients:

1. Onions
2. Garlic
3. Lamb Mince
4. Ginger
5. Tomatoes
6. Salt
7. Crushed Red Chilli
8. Ground Turmeric
9. Ground Coriander
10. Ground Cumin
11. Water
12. White Lentils
13. Garam Masala
14. Green Chillies
15. Fresh Coriander
16. Vegetable Oil

Bismillah, let's begin!


Peel and slice 3 onions, and fry in a few tablespoons vegetable oil until softened.



Add 6 peeled whole garlic cloves.



Fry until light brown.



Add 1 pound lamb mince.



Fry until brown, and then add a 2 inch piece ginger, crushed.



Add 2 roughly chopped tomatoes.



Time for the spices! Take:
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoon crushed red chilli
1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric (haldi)
2 teaspoon ground cumin
2 teaspoon ground coriander



Add to the saucepan.



Stir to combine, and fry for few minutes.



Add 1/2 cup water.



Stir to combine, and bring to the boil.



Simmer on low and cover for 30 minutes.



Next, add 1/2 cup white lentils (maash dhal) that have been soaked overnight.



Add them to the saucepan.



Stir to combine.



Pour in 1 cup water.



Stir to combine.



Bring to the boil, and then simmer on low for 15 minutes or until the lentils are soft.



Then, add 4 whole green chillies ..



.. 1 teaspoon garam masala ..



.. a handful chopped coriander ..



Stir to combine.



Serve straight away with roti or rice.
