Cheese Straws

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu!

Cheese Straws are great for when those unexpected guests pop in. They are wonderful warm but also great stored in a jar, and eaten cold with a selection of your favourite dips.

A Simple List of Ingredients:

1. Ready-Made Puff Pastry or My Recipe for Cheats Puff Pastry

2. Egg
3. Chilli Powder
4. Salt
5. Grated Cheese

Bismillah, let's start!

First, preheat the oven to Gas Mark 6.

Roll out a block of puff pastry into a rectangle 1/8 inch thick.

Beat together 1 egg, 1 teaspoon chilli powder and 1 teaspoon salt. You can add more or less chilli, it's up to how hot you can handle.

Brush the egg mix onto the first side of the pastry, with a pastry brush. You can buy pastry brushes here.

Turn the pastry sheet over.

And, brush the other side with the egg mix.

Sprinkle on as much grated cheese as you want.

Turn the pastry over.

And, sprinkle grated cheese onto the other side.

Cut the pastry into strips.

You can keep the straws as they are, or twist them.

Sprinkle extra chilli powder and salt on top to make them more crunchy.

Place on a greased oven tray and bake for 20 minutes in a preheated oven at Gas Mark 6.

These are best eaten fresh, but can be stored in a airtight container for a few days.

Wasalaam!
