Naan Bread

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu!

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

This recipe is for one of the most popular Pakistani breads and that is naan. 

Nothing beats fresh homemade naan and this is my mothers recipe. Her naan is always really soft yet crunchy at the same time. You have to try it!

A Simple List of Ingredients:

1. An Egg

2. Plain Yoghurt
3. Salt
4. Yeast
5. Sunflower Oil
6. Sugar
7. Plain Flour
8. Lukewarm Water

Bismillah, let's start!


 Take one large egg and crack into a large mixing bowl.

Add 4 tablespoons (90ml) of plain yoghurt.

Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt

Add 2 teaspoons (7g packet) Dried Yeast. Be sure to put the yeast on the opposite side of the bowl to the salt. The two should not directly touch.
  
Add a quarter cup (60ml) of sunflower or vegetable oil.

Add 1 teaspoon of sugar.

Whisk the mixture together.

Until it looks like this!

 The next ingredient is plain flour.

Add 12 ounces (340g) plain flour to the mixture.

Stir to combine.

Add enough lukewarm water to make a dough. I added about 100ml.

Knead the dough for 5 minutes with wet hands.

Cover the bowl with cling film and leave to rise in a warm place for at least 1 hour.
Shape the dough into balls and roll out into any shape and cook in a heavy pan.

Cook on both sides until golden brown and then butter it and enjoy!!

Ingredients
·      1 large Egg

·      Lukewarm Water (about 100ml)
·      Butter, to serve

Method

1.  Into a mixing bowl, place the egg, yoghurt, salt, yeast, oil and sugar. Whisk well.

2.  Add the plain flour and mix. Add enough lukewarm water to form a dough.

3.  Knead the dough for 5 minutes.

4.  Cover the bowl with cling film, and allow to rise for 1 hour in a warm place.

5.  Then, shape the dough into balls. Roll out and cook in a heavy bottomed pan until golden brown and cooked through.

6.  Spread with butter, and serve!

  2. Hi, would this receipe work if olive oil or coconut oil was used instead of sunflower oil?

    1. Hello Carla! I think it would be fine. But if you use the coconut oil, melt it first. Good luck!

  3. Your Food Looks Awesome. However I heard that Sunflower oil is not an oil of choice if you have high cholesterol, I prefer to use PVC Pure Virgin Coconut oil as it Is very good for the body. Healthy and gets used up as energy right away it won't get stored in the body. Would it change the flavour much. I'm curious to know I always cook with PV Coconut oil Virgin Coconut oil takes high heats without becoming carcinogenic. Thank you for your lovely blog. It's amazing.
